KILKENNY FOOTBALLERS pushed DIT all the way in the O'Byrne Cup clash at Freshford yesterday and were level with the visitors with 10 minutes remaining 2 - 6 to 0 - 12 but the students showing superior fitness reeled off six points without reply to win 0 - 18 to 2 - 6.
CARLOW started poorly against Wicklow in the O'Byrne Cup and trailed by 1 - 6 to 1 - 1 at half time.But they recovered well with corner forward Brian Murphy shooting five second half points to come within striking distance of their neighbours before conceding another goal in the closing minutes as they lost by five points 2 - 10 to 1 - 8.
This was the opening week - end of the GAA's latest drive to reduce fouling in Football and Hurling. It resulted in 80 players being sent off for yellow card offences.
The clash of Kildare and Wexford was the only game from the 24 played over the week - end that failed to yield a yellow card, while the FBD Connacht League clash between Leitrim and GMIT saw ten players sent off, 6 from Leitrim and 4 from GMIT as Leitrim finished with 13 players having used up their full quota of six players from the subs bench.
Interpretation will be the key to the success or failure of this latest initiative.

CARLOW FC has qualified for the Quarter Finals of the Eircom Under 20 League with a 2 - 1 win over Wexford Youths in Tullow Yesterday.
Adam Byrne netted the first from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time before Shane Clarke hit the second three minutes from time as Wexford got a consolation goal in injury time.
In the Carlow Premier Division St.Pat's Boys recorded a significant away win to Crettyard United, winning 1 - 0 as they bid to close the gap on unbeaten Parkville.
In the FAI JUNIOR CUP Lisselton of Kerry came to Johnstown and came away with a 2 - 0 win over Spa United.
In the Pat Maher Shield AC Kilkenny advanced to the semi finals with a 4 -3 win on penalties over Lions after it finished 0 - 0 AET.
In the Premier Division Freebooters were 4 - 0 away winners to Southend United while Evergreen travelled to Bennettsbridge and won 3 - 1 against East End while Thomastown won 2 - 1 at home to Stonyford United.
In the Ladies League there were wins for Tullaroan, Portlaoise, Freshford Town and Evergreen
FA Cup and the fourth round draw.
Aston Villa will take on either Chelthnam or Donacaster, Arsenal will play Cardiff, Tottenham will take on Manchester Utd. Chelsea will play Ipswich if they beat Southend.while it's non-league Kettering versus Fulham.
Nottingham Forrest who beat Man Cityhave been drawn with Derby.
Liverpool have been drawn with Everton.

It has been confirmed that Rua Tipoki who suffered a hamstring injury in the Magners League game against Ulster yesterday will be out of action for the next four weeks. He'll miss his side's final Pool games in the Heineken Cup.
Ronan O'Gara also suffered a hamstring injury but it's not as serious as first thought although he remains a doubt for the trip to Wales.
But Munster expect to have Paul O'Connell, Denis Leamy and Tomas O'Leary all in contention for a place in the squad for the Ospreys game.
